Unveiled at the Villa d'Este Concours d'Elegance in Italy in May 2024, the BMW Skytop concept is finally becoming a reality, but it will be an extremely limited series. Only 50 units will be produced.

BMW has confirmed that it will put the Concept Skytop it brought to this year’s Villa d’Este Concorso d’Eleganza into production. The German marque plans to build just 50 examples of the two-seater, but the fact that it’s going into production at all is a victory for anyone who appreciated beautiful automotive design.

As the ancient proverb goes, “If you build it, they will come.” In the case of the BMW Skytop Concept, everyone showed up before the vehicle was even built. That’s the bad news. The good news is that it’s being built in the first place.

At the time it was unveiled, however, BMW said the Skytop Concept would not be made into a production car due to costs. But due to incessant demand from customers with deep pockets, the automaker eventually changed their minds and said the Skytop would be turned into a production car.

BMW has not explicitly said that the Skytop is based on the BMW M8 Convertible, but the engine says as much. It's a 4.4-liter mill generating the same 617 horsepower (625 PS) as the M8 Competition, and power goes to all four wheels through an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. BMW claims a 0-62 mph time of roughly 3.3 seconds.

BMW has confirmed that its much-anticipated Concept Skytop, which dazzled automotive enthusiasts at its Villa d’Este debut earlier this year, will enter limited production. Much like the exclusive 2022 BMW 3.

Although it was originally presented as a concept car, the Bavarian carmaker has announced that the elegant Skytop roadster will be produced in limited numbers.
