For the first time since AT&T was dismantled into Baby Bells four decades ago, the US government is weighing the breakup of one of the world’s largest and most consequential monopolies: Google.

The US Department of Justice is considering having Google break off parts of its business and share search results with competitors after a federal judge found that it abused its monopoly over the search industry. As the Justice Department seeks to possibly break up Google, the search giant's parent company's stock has barely moved.

The DOJ has already filed in court in a move that could also force Google to reveal the inner workings of its search result rankings and AI tools.
